How to get the best out of your wireless router

The broadband speed you get from your computer decreases the further you are from your router. If you need to connect to the wireless router from multiple rooms then centrally locate the router so as to minimise the distance to the router.

Performance can also be affected by interference from a myriad of sources. Therefore do not use your computer or place your wireless router in the vicinity of other devices in the house that can cause interference, like cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors or halogen lamps.

Reception will be better if the wireless signal doesn't have to go through thick walls, mirrors, fish tanks or anything metal and does not have to travel at steep angles.

Disconnections and inconsistent download speeds can be caused when wireless router and a neighbour's router are broadcasting either on the same channel or on adjacent channels. The default signal channel set on wireless routers is usually set to 6. Wireless signals can be broadcast on a range of different frequencies and most models go average speed* 11 but some stretch to 13 so if you are experiencing disconnections and inconsistent download speeds try logging onto your wireless router and then change the signal channel to another channel.
