Unfortunately, the average broadband speeds UK broadband providers advertise are only attainable under optimum conditions and these average speeds have been found to be achievable for 50% of each broadband provider's customers between 8-10pm.
In order to bring clarity to the consumer UK broadband providers must alert customers to the speed they are likely to receive before they sign a contract. What this means is that the company must quote each customer an "expected" speed for a property in Paignton and also must give a so-called "minimum guaranteed" speed for a property in Paignton which is the highest broadband speed available to the slowest 10 per cent of households in the area.
These rules theoretically enable people in Paignton to leave contracts early if their broadband speed is below this "minimum" level.
The upshot of all this is that you should take note of the "minimum guaranteed” speed that the broadband provider will state that you are likely to receive in Paignton so that at a future date if your broadband speed falls below this then it gives you recourse to cancel your contract.
The speeds advertised for Fibre to the Premices (FTTP) broadband are the speeds that you will get as it doesn’t suffer from signal loss due to distance.
The main reason why these advertised average broadband speeds are not always attainable is down to the technology used. FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) which is the most widely deployed fibre technology in the UK, used by Openreach and subsequently all providers who rely on Openreach’s fibre infrastructure to provide fibre broadband, namely Sky, Plusnet, TalkTalk etc, is distance dependant, as it is dependent on VDSL2 technology utilising copper cable to connect from the cabinet to your home. VDSL2 and copper cable are highly susceptible to interference and attainable speeds fall off as the distance from the cabinet to your home increases.
As the chart displayed below illustrates, there is a gradual decrease in attainable FTTC broadband speeds as the distance from the cabinet to your home increase after 200 metres.
Obviously the broadband provider is obligated by Ofcom to provide you, the consumer, with an estimated access line speed before you sign up to their product and this estimated access line speed will reflect the distance dependant attainable speed. Nevertheless, the fact that attainable FTTC broadband speeds are dependent on the distance from the cabinet to your home should be taken into consideration when you evaluate the pros and cons of subscribing to fibre broadband.
The availability of fibre Broadband in Paignton is not determined exclusively by whether the exchange that Paignton is connected to is fibre broadband enabled.
In an ideal world when an exchange is fibre broadband enabled it should be safe to assume that 1Gbit/s FTTP broadband would be available to everyone connected to it. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Openreach and other companies are constantly expanding their FTTP networks but presently a large proportion of the UK does not have access to FTTP. The most readily available fibre technology deployed in these areas where FTTP has not been enabled is Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC).
Before the introduction of fibre broadband when exchanges were configured to provide only ADSL it was beneficial to live near an exchange as you were guaranteed to get the fastest broadband in the area because the close proximity to the exchange provided the shortest distance and thus fastest speed to your home. As it stands today though it is more often the case that living in close proximity to an exchange is a barrier to getting FTTC broadband because of what BT’s Openreach refer to as 'Exchange Only' lines.
FTTC broadband is sent through fibre optic cable to a street cabinet that then connects to your home via copper cabling. Premises that live in close proximity to an exchange (generally under 500m) which have 'Exchange Only' lines are not connected to a fibre broadband cabinet but are directly connected to the exchange via old copper cables and thus cannot get fibre broadband.
Exchange Only lines are not the only reason you may not get fibre broadband when your exchange is fibre broadband enabled. There are a number of reasons this might happen namely:
If your line is too far from the local street cabinet.
If your local street cabinet is unsuitable for fibre optic cables.
If BT hasn't yet got the local council's planning permission to do the work at your street cabinet needed to upgrade to fibre broadband.
Virgin Media fibre broadband customers do not suffer from Openreach’s Exchange Only lines problem because Virgin Media uses its own fibre broadband network infrastructure which does not use Openreach’s exchanges. Virgin Media also uses a different fibre broadband technology to BT’s Openreach called Fibre to the Node (FTTN). Fibre to the Node involves running fibre to a street-side cabinet and then a connection is made to the house using a coaxial cable. This coaxial cable offers more resilience to interference than a standard copper phone line so it is possible to attain faster broadband speeds over this. Currently Virgin Media FTTN offers speeds ranging from an average speed of 54 Mbps to an average speed of 1130 Mbps.
It is common for people to become complacent about their broadband and assume that their broadband provider will give them the best deal when it comes to renewing their contract. Unfortunately this is not the case and people who don't shop around for a better broadband deal and just renew their contract find themselves with broadband that is overpriced as broadband providers see this as complicity and an opportunity to extend profit margins.
There are a myriad of possible broadband deals so in order to get a fix on the broadband deal that is right for you ask yourself a few simple questions.
Obviously people use their broadband for different purposes and this gives rise to different broadband speed requirements. Somebody who just uses their broadband to view the news or send emails does not need fast broadband whereas online gamers will want the fastest available broadband.
Speed is also important when you consider how many people in your household will be simultaneously using the broadband connection. For example if your household has 5 people online and you were using BT Full Fibre 500 then this 500Mbps would be shared 5 ways theoretically giving each person a speed of 100Mbps. Obviously the 500Mbps wouldn’t be shared out equally that way because it would depend on what each person was doing on the connection at that point of time. This is a simplification but it nevertheless serves to illustrate the issue.
Broadband contracts today vary from 1 month to 24 months. What you should understand when assessing this is that most broadband contracts are not price fixed meaning that the price per month will change over the duration of the contract.
Also tying yourself to a long contract could cause problems down the line if for example your broadband requirements change or you unsatisfied with the service provided.
You can bundle broadband, telephone calls, television and mobile sims in an array of different combinations which can lead to big savings overall. By bundling your telephone calls and broadband together many broadband providers will add inclusive calls. Obviously it is important to check the call rates of each provider to ensure that this is cost effective.
Some people do not have a requirement for a landline opting instead to use their mobile phones to make calls. Many providers have noticed this trend and now offer broadband without a landline.
Alternatively if you do not require a landline you can get your broadband using 4G or 5G Wireless. One of the advantages of using 4G or 5G Wireless to receive your broadband is that there is no installation. You just plug your wireless Broadband hub in and you’re ready to go online.
This may seem obvious but unfortunately it is surprising how many people don’t truly take this into consideration.
The cost of broadband varies greatly. Many people sign a broadband deal and find themselves guilty of false economy because by spending too little they find that it doesn't provide all their requirements. Alternatively many people widely overspend only to find that they do not require all the services and features of the broadband deal.
When assessing your broadband budget it is also important to note that when you sign a broadband deal then there is a minimum contract length that you will be tied to and if at a future date you find that you cannot afford to pay the monthly costs and you are still within the minimum contract length, then you will find yourself liable to the provider for substantial amounts of money.
One final piece of advice, at the point of sale you will be given a minimum guaranteed broadband speed. It is important to note this speed because if in the future your broadband falls below this minimum guaranteed speed the company will have 30 days to improve the speed and if they are unable to do this then you will have the right to exit your contract penalty free.
The odds are that you are not looking to sign your first ever broadband contract but rather you are looking to sign a new broadband contract and you are looking to get the best value broadband deal for your money. We believe that the best and quickest way for you to find the deal that best matches your expectations is to provide you with all the necessary information for you to be able to make a sensible calculated decision as to what best matches your technical requirements and desired expenditure. With this in mind as you can see from the comparison table above we present you with all the information that you need, from the headline deal cost right down to the post and packaging costs in an easily searchable table.
At the end of the day whether you decide to go with fibre broadband or ADSL broadband you will find that there is a vast range and diversity of broadband deals that are available in Paignton which is evidenced in the comparison table displayed above.
I moved into a new build house in Paignton 2 years ago, the only down side was the broadband speed available was max 6Mbps. We were told by Openreach that we should have been connected to the cabinet just down the road but were connected to one over 600 meters away? Therefore no fibre. Have been told houses that are 3 properties away now have fibre broadband and we seem not to be able to get any answers as to when our property will be able to have the same. 18 months ago a man from BT said that they were expecting the work to be carried out within 6 months. Have not heard from him since. I just want an answer as to when fibre broadband will be available to us?

Currently FTTC Superfast Fibre broadband is unavailable for new connections in Kirkstyle, Biggar as cabinet 2 connected to Biggar exchange is full to capacity. Very frustrating
